I compared my old Black and Decker Versabrew coffee maker to the Michael Graves and the Mr. Coffee (FTX41) coffee makers.
On this site, the Michael Graves received excellent reviews and the Mr. Coffee received poor reviews.
For my test I filled all three coffee makes to the 10-cup level. Set all selections to "high, or strong brew" if so equipped. I brewed only hot water. No actual coffee, or filter, was used.
Here are the results:
PROS:
Brew time (10 cups):
8 year old Black and Decker - 8 minutes
Mr. Coffee - 8:30
Michael Graves - 9:00
Water temperature:
8 year old Black and Decker - 155 degrees
Mr. Coffee - 165 degrees
Michael Graves - 165 degrees
Ease of cleaning:
8 year old Black and Decker - Very easy.
Mr. Coffee - Very easy for the unit. Not so easy for the inside of the carafe.
Michael Graves - Very easy for the unit. Not so easy for the inside of the carafe.
Style:
8 year old Black and Decker - Plain.
Mr. Coffee - Stylish
Michael Graves - Decent, except for the out of place (odd color) look to the water reservoir. In fact, the entire design is odd.
CONS:
8 year old Black and Decker - None.
Mr. Coffee - Controls are located at the top of the machine. This would make the circuit boards extremely vulernable to moisture (direct water or steam). I believe this is why it stops working after a few months and is the result of all the bad reviews.
Michael Graves - Difficult to pour all the coffee out of the carafe. I had to turn the carafe entirely upside down to empty it.

We have had 5 coffee makers in the last 25 years and have had to replace them for MANY reasons. This is the best one so far! We recently re-did our entire kitchen, so all the appliances were upgraded/changed (we replaced brand X, because the hot plate coating peeled off, as did many of the others we had). When I was shopping around for a coffee maker, there were 4 important things to us...programmable, auto-shut off, removable reservoir and spill proof carafe. This has given us all 4 and then some! We have had it for 4 months now and continue to get compliments on both the look and the flavor of the coffee. As one of the reviewers mentioned, there is condensation that comes from the basket area when you remove the basket & lift the lid for cleaning, but I have NEVER owned a coffee maker that didn’t drip condensation! Since I know that, I always have a paper towel folded in a square, lay it on the hot plate and then remove the basket. It also helps to keep the hot plate clean & dry. Yes, the clock contract could be a little better to see at a distance, but we have so many other appliances throughout our entire kitchen that have clocks, it’s no big deal to us. Plus when you are close to the maker, you can see it largely and clearly.
We are very satisfied with our new coffee maker and for the price, it’s the best deal yet!

This is by far the best coffeemaker I have ever owned (and I have owned quite a few). I love the fact that the water tank is removable and the coffee pot spout is fantastic. Many of the other ones I have used always dripped when I tried to pour the coffee. One of the main reasons I like this one is that the coffee actually stays hot for a long time. I can't recommend this product enough. You will not be disappointed with this purchase.

I have been living with my el cheap-o 9 dollar coffee maker for a year and a half - I bought it when I first had to furnish my new apt. quickly and cheaply.. well yesterday, it finally died and just as it went on the blink and I said to myself "I need a new coffee maker" I turned around and there was this michael graves coffee maker being reviewed on the local news' consumer report segment. Bam! there was my answer! I Checked out the reviews, found on at my local target bought it, and I'm drinking the coffee now. Its great, I love the design, keeps the coffee nice and hot, the controls are simple and I love the bold yet comfortable design. The "flavor plus" control makes it brew more slowly and you can get more flavor out of less coffee grounds. I love the display and timer.

A Consumer Reports best buy. My first time taking their advice and I am more than pleased. Out of the box, quick rinse with soap and water, and a really nice cup of coffee a few short minutes later. Instruction manuel is 6 pages, most of which tell you how to clean it various ways. The flavor plus gives you a nice strong cup of joe if you need it. For the price... I don't think there's a better coffee maker out there.

I have had this coffeemaker for about 2 months now, and i have to say this is the best coffeemaker i have ever had. The removable water tank is the best thing i have seen on a coffeemaker. I have well water, and it leaves stains in the tank, now i can remove it and clean it easy.
Love the design, easy to program, and very quite. Would buy this maker again ans again.

We picked up this one for our office so we could have a programmable coffee maker with auto-shutoff. This one *is* an auto-shutoff. I didn't see that mentioned on the website, but it is on the box. I love how this coffee maker pours the coffee where it's supposed to and doesn't spill everywhere else. After using this coffee maker at work, I am disgusted with my coffee maker at home and want to buy another one of these. My clock display is bright and crisp. The Flavor Plus feature is great! Triston, won't you send me yours? :-)

Consumer reports was right that this was one of the best coffeemakers in it's price range. It brews at a higher temperature to bring out the best flavor. We love the elongated spout and the removable resevoir. It's nice to know you can have great design and great function at a reasonable price.

This coffeemaker is made by Hamilton Beach - I don't understand why that isn't disclosed online. Anyway, for the price this little coffeemaker makes a decent cup of coffee. I've had mine for 6 months and no problems whatsoever. I don't really notice a difference in taste with the flavor button (and it takes much longer to brew if you use it). The only thing I don't like is the design of the carafe - the lid is hinged and not removeable, which makes it a little awkward to wash and dry - especially if you like to dry yours on the drainboard like I do - almost impossible with the hinged lid open.

We're Very Pleased with this Coffee Maker

I feel lucky to have come across this coffee maker since it seems to be limited to Target. It’s a very cool design, it’s very easy to use and the price is right. (Actually, the price can’t be beat for a coffee maker as nice as this.) I bought it in white to match my appliances but when I came back a month later to write this review, the white is no longer listed. So now I feel twice as lucky! (Maybe it’s just temporarily out of stock.)
It makes 12 cups which was a pleasant surprise since the description doesn't say. As mentioned on other reviews, it has a removable water tank. You simply remove the tank, fill it with water and set it back onto the coffee maker. No pouring water into a fixed tank. This is not only convenient but it makes cleaning the water container really easy unlike a fixed container that’s practically impossible to clean.
[The coffee filter basket is removable]. It just locks down into place so you have to lift the handle of the basket for it to come out. [...] [Also the coffee pot handle] has a nice big, round handle and is not "slippery".
I have had no leaking problems[...]. In fact, it has a nice size, uniquely designed drip opening in case you don’t line the pot up perfectly. It also has a pause feature in case you’re desperate (we’ve all been there) and need to steal a cup before the brewing process is complete. Another nice feature is what’s called Flavor Brew. When this button is pushed the brewing processes takes a bit longer but that’s the point. The result is you end up with a pot of coffee that’s stronger or more full bodied. (Just like I like it!)
It’s quiet unlike my previous coffee maker which sounded like a popcorn maker towards the end of the brewing cycle. It shuts off automatically after 2 hours and is programmable if you want your coffee waiting for you in the morning. Cord length is perfect since I have an outlet nearby. Most importantly, it makes a nice tasting cup of coffee.
My only complaint is I wish the coffee brewed hotter.
